Children at Bewbush follow a broad and varied curriculum which places the key life skills of Literacy and Maths at its very heart. We dedicate all morning to these core subjects and ensure that key skills continue to be taught across our range of foundation subjects. Each year group follows a range of engaging and relevant topics which give children a balanced understanding of the world as well as a thirst for learning.

Reading is a key priority at Bewbush, with an expectation that children will read at home every night. Those children who do meet this challenge receive a special reading treat every Friday.
Our younger readers follow the Read Write Inc phonics scheme when learning to read. This scheme places an emphasis on reading for meaning, so children quickly develop understanding skills alongside their ability to decode words.
At Bewbush, we encourage creativity at all levels of our writing, trying to link this to our year group topics wherever possible. Children complete weekly Big Writes, and on the first Friday of every month take part in a school-wide FFF (First Friday Fandango). During our FFFs, children write independently based on a stimulus, helping to develop a whole host of writing skills which can be used across the curriculum.
We love challenging and relevant Maths, and our curriculum ensures that all Maths is as exciting as possible and always linked to real life. We encourage mental maths through our daily MM (Magic Maths) session and we keep a close eye on children’s calculation skills with our comprehensive skills tracker.
We use exciting topics to link together our learning in the foundation subjects (Art, DT, History, Geography, Music, ICT) as well as our learning in Literacy. To view the topics for this year click here.
